Junior Order United American Mechanics National Orphans Home
Junior Order United American Mechanics National Orphans Home, Historic orphanage complex in Lexington, North Carolina.
The Junior Order United American Mechanics National Orphans Home is a complex of five Colonial Revival buildings spread across a large expanse of land. The site includes multiple residential buildings, with one now serving as emergency shelter for children in difficult circumstances.
The complex opened in 1932 to provide shelter and care for children without parents during a difficult economic time. Architect Herbert B. Hunter designed the buildings following the model of established American institutions.
The buildings display classical American architecture with brick walls laid in careful patterns that recall famous university structures. Visitors can see the craftsmanship and thoughtful design meant to reflect a stable and supportive home environment.
The property covers a large area with multiple buildings that should be explored on foot to see all sections. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes since the site requires considerable walking.
A large auditorium was completed and has since served as a gathering place for meetings and activities within the property. The building reflects the importance placed on community gatherings and shared experiences.
