The Last Billboard, Public art billboard in East Liberty, Pittsburgh, US.
The Last Billboard was a public art installation in East Liberty featuring large metal letters mounted on a steel frame at the corner of Highland and Baum. The letters could be rearranged by hand to display different messages created by visiting artists.
The installation was founded in 2010 by a Carnegie Mellon professor as a space for monthly artistic contributions. It operated until 2018, displaying new messages from different creators throughout its existence.
Different artists and thinkers contributed messages each month that prompted people to think about their city, themselves, and the world around them. The changing words reflected a wide range of perspectives and turned this corner into a place where ideas met the street.
The installation stood at a busy corner where thousands of people passed by each day, making it easy to spot from the street. The letters changed regularly, so new messages appeared throughout the year.
The letters were made from heavy wood and required careful manual work to rearrange them each month for new messages. This hands-on approach made every message change feel like a special event rather than an automated update.
