Salmon River Falls

Salmon River Falls is a waterfall in Oswego County in New York, where water drops approximately 110 feet over a rocky cliff made of shale and limestone. The cascade flows through a forested setting and creates a strong natural feature that changes with the seasons.

The site served as an important salmon fishing ground for Iroquois peoples until the 1800s, when dam construction altered water patterns. This change ended the natural migration routes that fish had followed for generations.

The site serves as a natural classroom for geological studies, displaying rock formations and seasonal water patterns that reflect the region's natural processes.

Access is available through a parking area on Falls Road, with viewing platforms positioned to see the water from different angles. The best time to visit is during dry weather when the trails around the site are easy to walk on.

During winter, the waterfall freezes and transforms into an ice climbing destination that attracts experienced climbers from the region. This frozen form offers a very different experience compared to visiting during warmer months.
