Michael Braun House, Colonial stone house near Granite Quarry, North Carolina, United States.
The Michael Braun House is a two-story, four-bay-wide stone house with two end chimneys and a one-story frame kitchen wing on its east side. It was built over seven years from about 3,500 tons of granite taken from a quarry in the area. A pent roof runs along the north and west sides of the restored house.
Michael Braun built this house between 1758 and 1766 using granite extracted from a nearby quarry. The structure ranks among the oldest known residential buildings in Rowan County from that era.
The house is an example of early German Colonial architecture, the building style German settlers brought from Pennsylvania and their homeland. Its name comes from Michael Braun, who bought the 274-acre tract in the late 1750s; locally it is also called the Old Stone House. The Rowan Museum restored it and opened it to visitors in 1966.
The house opens to visitors from April through November as part of the Rowan Museum collection. Plan your visit during these months and allow time to examine the stone construction and interior room layouts carefully.
The house was abandoned for about fifty years before the Rowan Museum bought it in 1959; after restoration it opened to tourists in 1966. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 28, 1971.
