Salisbury Prison, Military cemetery and national cemetery in Salisbury, North Carolina, United States.
Salisbury Prison is a national military cemetery in Salisbury, North Carolina, situated on the grounds of a former Civil War prison camp. The site consists of open, tree-lined fields with burial sections for both caskets and cremated remains.
The cemetery was established in 1864 alongside a military prison where thousands of Union soldiers died in captivity. After the war, it was formally designated as a national cemetery to give those soldiers a proper burial ground.
Scattered across the grounds are memorial stones placed by different states to honor soldiers who died in captivity nearby. These markers show how communities far away still feel a connection to this place today.
The cemetery has walking paths throughout and is easy to navigate on foot. Because the grounds are large, checking a map before arriving can help you find specific sections without getting turned around.
Parts of the grounds still show the faint outlines of burial trenches from the Civil War, where soldiers were placed in the earth without coffins. These low ridges in the grass are easy to miss but they mark some of the oldest graves on the site.
