Savin Rock Amusement Park, Former amusement park in West Haven, Connecticut
Savin Rock Amusement Park was a seaside entertainment complex with a mile-long midway lined with rides and attractions stretching along the coast. The park featured multiple roller coasters, water rides, carousels, and gaming venues that entertained families throughout the season.
The park began in the 1870s when entrepreneur George Kelsey expanded trolley lines and built a landing dock at Beach Street. The operation thrived for many decades before natural disasters in the mid-twentieth century led to its eventual closure.
The park generated 1.2 million annual visitors by 1919, establishing itself as Connecticut's premier entertainment destination comparable to New York's Coney Island.
The Savin Rock Museum holds photographs, objects, and memorabilia from the former park and displays its history. Visitors can learn about the attractions and what life was like there during its peak years.
Liberty Pier, which opened in 1922, brought new rides including The Devil roller coaster and Bluebeard's Castle funhouse. Operations were severely disrupted when the major hurricane of 1938 destroyed numerous structures.
