Beth Israel Synagogue
Beth Israel Synagogue, Orthodox synagogue on Orchard Street in New Haven, Connecticut.
Beth Israel Synagogue is a Colonial Revival prayer house made of brick with traditional Jewish architectural elements and large windows. The interior features bright light filling the main prayer hall and creating an open, welcoming space for worship.
The synagogue was founded in 1913 and moved to its permanent location on Orchard Street in 1925. Architect Louis Abramowitz designed the building, which preserves the history of New Haven's Jewish community.
The congregation follows Orthodox traditions with regular services on Saturday mornings and celebrates Jewish holidays throughout the year. Visitors can experience the religious rhythm of the community and observe traditional practices in action.
The building welcomes visitors during High Holiday services and maintains a schedule of daily prayers at set times. It helps to check ahead when services occur to plan a visit appropriately.
A restoration project in the early 2000s undertook extensive work to bring back the building. After years of silence, prayer life fully returned to this space in 2011.
