Thunderbolt, Wooden roller coaster at Savin Rock Amusement Park, Connecticut, US.

Thunderbolt was a wooden roller coaster that extended over Liberty Pier into the water and reached about 92 feet in height. The structure featured approximately 5,000 feet of track with the typical design elements of coasters from that era.

Thunderbolt opened in 1925 at Savin Rock and was later renamed. A natural disaster caused severe damage to the structure, after which it operated in a modified form until 1956.

The Thunderbolt got its distinctive name from the engineers who designed it, replacing an earlier title. The name reflected the thrilling character of this wooden coaster built over water.

The location over water required special maintenance due to salt water exposure and weather conditions. Visitors should know that rides of this era had particular safety and upkeep requirements.

Lightning struck the wooden structure in 1936 and caused mechanical damage. The ride had to close for extensive repairs following this incident.
