The Harbor History Museum is a history museum in Gig Harbor with exhibitions about the development of the region from early settlement to modern times. The rooms display objects from different periods that tell the story of how the peninsula changed and grew.
The museum opened at its current 14,500-square-foot building on Harborview Drive in downtown Gig Harbor in 2010, after receiving a $1.5 million gift from a local family. In 2009, the 1893 Midway Schoolhouse was moved onto the museum grounds. In late 2014, the board announced monthly music concerts starting in 2015.
The Midway Pioneer School Experience, which won the Washington Museum Association's Award of Project Excellence, leads grade-school students through a day in an early 20th-century classroom. The one-room Midway Schoolhouse, built in 1893 and moved to the museum grounds in 2009, is the setting for this living history program.
The museum stands at 4121 Harborview Drive on downtown Gig Harbor's waterfront, in a 14,500-square-foot building opened in 2010. Midway Schoolhouse, the 1893 one-room school moved onto the grounds in 2009, sits outside the main galleries. Allow time for both the indoor exhibits and the schoolhouse.
The Shenandoah fished the San Juan Islands from 1925 until its owner, Tony Janovich, donated it to the museum in 2000. The wooden boat is now the subject of an ongoing restoration project on the museum grounds.
