Central of Georgia Railway Company Shop Property, Railway heritage site in Savannah, United States.
The Central of Georgia Railway Company Shop Property is a railway industrial complex in Savannah with multiple buildings including a freight house, cotton storage area, and a brick viaduct spanning railroad tracks. The structures originally functioned as repair workshops and served as the company's main operating center.
The property began as repair workshops for the Central of Georgia Railway and served as the company's operational hub until merging with Southern Railway in 1963. This merger marked the end of independent operations at this location.
The former railway workshops now serve as teaching spaces for the Savannah College of Art and Design, where students learn within the restored industrial buildings. The site shows how working places from the past can become centers for creative learning.
The site is located on Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard and can be explored through exhibits and guided tours connected to the Georgia State Railroad Museum. Plan to spend time walking around the different buildings and inspecting the restored railroad structures throughout the property.
The property holds some of the oldest railroad repair structures in the United States with preserved industrial buildings from the 1800s. These early workshop buildings display construction methods that were typical for the origins of American railroad manufacturing.
