Independent Presbyterian Church, Protestant church in Savannah, United States
The Independent Presbyterian Church is a Protestant place of worship on Bull Street featuring white exterior walls, tall supporting columns, and a striking steeple at its center. The building displays symmetrically arranged windows that allow light into the sanctuary interior.
The congregation began in 1755 as Georgia's first Presbyterian gathering, established on land granted by King George II. After fires damaged earlier structures, the current building rose in 1891 in its place.
The church's name reflects its independent founding by Presbyterian settlers who established their own congregation. Inside, the layout shows how the community gathered for worship and maintained their faith traditions.
Tours are available during weekday hours, while the building hosts Sunday services and additional gatherings on Wednesday evenings. Check ahead to confirm tour availability, as schedules may change seasonally or for special events.
Lowell Mason worked as the church organist and created numerous hymns that became central to American Protestant music. His compositions found their way into churches across the country and remain sung in worship settings today.
