Savannah Theatre, Historic theatre in Downtown Savannah, United States.
Savannah Theatre is a theater on Bull Street in downtown Savannah, Georgia, with a neoclassical facade and a classical auditorium of around 500 seats. The stage is equipped with modern production technology, while the rest of the building retains its original character.
William Jay designed the building in 1818, making it one of the oldest theaters in continuous operation in the United States. Over the following decades it went through several renovations without losing its essential character.
The Savannah Theatre stages musicals, comedy shows, and dance performances aimed at a broad mix of locals and out-of-town visitors. The classical interior gives the experience a sense of occasion that a modern venue rarely provides.
Buying tickets in advance is a good idea, as evening shows tend to sell out. The theater sits on Bull Street and is easy to reach on foot from most of the historic downtown area.
The theater faces Chippewa Square, the same plaza used for the bench scenes in the film Forrest Gump, though the bench was removed after filming. Today the square centers on a statue of General Oglethorpe, the founder of Georgia.
