SCAD Museum of Art, Contemporary art museum in downtown Savannah, United States.
The SCAD Museum of Art is an art museum in downtown Savannah, housed in a restored historic building and presenting both rotating exhibitions and permanent collections. The permanent holdings focus on African American art, photography, and contemporary works across different media.
The building that houses the museum opened in 2011 and was built around the surviving walls of a railway depot from the 1850s that once served the Central of Georgia rail line. The depot had been abandoned for decades before it was incorporated into the new museum structure.
The museum gives space to both established and emerging artists through a program that changes regularly throughout the year. This makes each visit feel different from the last, as the works on display shift with each new exhibition.
The museum is located in central Savannah and is easy to reach on foot from most points in the historic district. A half-day is generally enough to see the permanent collection and one or two temporary exhibitions at a relaxed pace.
The Walter O. Evans Collection held here covers more than three centuries of African American art and is one of the largest of its kind in the country. Many of the artists represented in it are rarely found in other major museum collections.
