Phil-Ellena, Greek Revival mansion in Mount Airy, United States
Phil-Ellena was a Greek Revival mansion distinguished by four fluted columns supporting a pedimented portico, with sculptures of Minerva and Eloquence carved by John Rush. The house sat on a 300-acre estate featuring two artificial lakes that supplied water to the property.
The mansion was built in 1845 as the residence of George Washington Carpenter and stood as the largest Greek Revival structure in the United States until its demolition in 1892. Its construction reflected the prosperity and classical architectural preferences of that era in American history.
The estate housed a Greek temple museum displaying natural science collections, reflecting the owner's passion for scientific research and specimen preservation. Visitors could see rare objects that showcased the intellectual interests of the prominent family.
The property was located near the intersection of Germantown Avenue and Pelham Road in Mount Airy, making it easy to find. The expansive grounds allowed visitors to explore the entire estate and its various structures.
The estate was home to a 65-foot clock tower in Chinese pagoda style that chimed the hours for the surrounding Mount Airy community until 1900. This unusual tower was a distinctive feature of the landscape and served as a public timekeeper for local residents.
