Sedgwick Theatre, Art deco theater in Mt. Airy, Philadelphia, US
The Sedgwick Theatre is a cinema and performance venue on Germantown Avenue featuring ornate plasterwork, glass chandeliers, and decorative ceiling reliefs from the 1920s. The interior preserves these artistic details from the Art Deco period while spaces are currently being renovated to add more seating.
The building was designed and operated as a movie palace by architect William Harold Lee starting in 1928. It closed in 1966 and served as storage space for several decades before returning to use as a performance venue.
The space now serves as the permanent home of Quintessence Theatre Group, which performs classical plays here regularly. The theater has become a gathering place for theater lovers in the neighborhood.
The front lobby area provides a performance space while renovations are actively underway throughout the building. Check ahead to confirm which areas are available since construction work is still ongoing.
The theater takes its name from Sedgwick Tourison, whose family was instrumental in shaping Mount Airy's development. This connection to the neighborhood's early history is not immediately obvious when looking at the building.
