Mount Airy, Northwest residential district and gay village in Philadelphia, United States.
Mount Airy is a residential neighborhood in northwest Philadelphia with a mix of many different house types, from older buildings to more modern structures. The area is shaped by its tree-lined streets and rolling terrain, which give it its characteristic appearance.
Merchant William Allen, who later became Chief Justice of Pennsylvania, built his summer estate on Germantown Avenue in the mid-1700s. The area later developed into a large residential community, gaining recognition in the 1950s for integration efforts.
The neighborhood serves as an important hub for Philadelphia's LGBTQ+ community and draws people who value openness and diversity. Streets and local businesses reflect this mix, creating a welcoming atmosphere for different kinds of residents.
Two SEPTA rail lines connect the neighborhood to downtown Philadelphia, with stations scattered throughout East and West Mount Airy. The area is walkable on foot, as the terrain is relatively flat within each section, though hills can appear between them.
The neighborhood borders the expansive Wissahickon Valley Park, whose trails wind through forested valleys and along riverbanks. This park offers residents and visitors direct access to nature and outdoor activities right from their doorstep.
