The building's name comes from the surrounding city of Belle Meade, and it stands opposite the Belle Meade Country Club. After Herbert H. Corson bought it in 1919, his descendants inherited it, and the city was later incorporated with zoning ordinances to block further apartment or commercial development nearby.
