Medlicott Dome, Granite dome summit in Yosemite National Park, California, US.
Medlicott Dome is a granite dome summit that rises to 9,665 feet (2,945 meters) and stands between Mariolumne Dome and Dozier Dome along Tioga Road. The solid granite formation dominates the surrounding landscape in this section of the Sierra Nevada.
The dome received its name in 1882 in honor of Henry P. Medlicott, who surveyed and mapped the Great Sierra Wagon Road. Before this, the granite formation was called Court House Rock.
The western face attracts climbers who have named the routes here with distinctive titles, from easier ascents to difficult challenges. These names reflect how the climbing community uses and describes this stone face.
Access starts from the John Muir - Cathedral Lakes Trailhead, with a 7.5-mile (12-kilometer) route that climbs significantly through the Sierra Nevada. Visitors should be prepared for rough conditions and bring appropriate gear for uneven terrain.
The granite formation spans across both Mariposa and Tuolumne Counties, creating an unusual jurisdictional situation that affects how it is mapped and documented. This county boundary crossing makes it a curious case for surveyors and geographers.
