Bagheera, Historic schooner at Maine State Pier, Portland, United States
Bagheera is a wooden two-masted sailing vessel moored at the Maine State Pier in Portland's Old Port district. The schooner features a white oak frame, pine planking, and mahogany railings that reflect the shipbuilding traditions of Maine's maritime heritage.
Naval architect John Alden designed this two-masted schooner in 1924 as part of a new generation of working sailing vessels. The ship later saw competitive racing on the Great Lakes before being repositioned as an educational and tourism vessel in Maine waters.
The schooner serves as a working vessel where visitors can experience traditional sailing methods and observe how crew members maintain and operate wooden boat systems throughout the day.
Visitors can join sailing tours departing from the Old Port, typically available from late spring through early fall. The vessel is easily accessible and tours accommodate different experience levels.
The schooner doubles as a floating classroom for students studying marine ecology and environmental science in Casco Bay. This approach merges traditional sailing with hands-on scientific learning on the water.
