St. Roch Market, Food hall in New Orleans, United States.
St. Roch Market is a food hall on St. Roch Avenue in the St. Roch neighborhood of New Orleans, Louisiana, with a row of independent vendor stalls inside a restored white building. The stalls line the walls of a central open room, and a shared seating area fills the middle of the space.
The market opened in 1875 as one of the first public markets in New Orleans outside the French Quarter, serving the working-class residents of the surrounding neighborhood. In the 1930s, a federal works program funded major renovations that gave the building the form it has today.
The market's name comes from Saint Roch, a patron saint of the sick who is deeply respected in this part of New Orleans. On weekends, locals from the surrounding neighborhood gather here to share a meal, making it as much a community space as a place to eat.
The market is in the St. Roch neighborhood, a short distance from the main tourist areas, and is easy to reach on foot or by bike. Late morning tends to be a good time to visit if you want to browse the stalls without much of a crowd.
After Hurricane Katrina, the market stayed closed for nearly a decade before reopening in 2015 following a full renovation. That reopening was seen by many in the neighborhood as a sign that the area was coming back to life after years of neglect.
