Mountain Lake Wilderness Cluster

Mountain Lake Wilderness Cluster is a protected area spanning over 11,000 acres of forest, streams, and mountain terrain within two national forests. The land is crossed by eight primary hiking trails, including well-known routes like the Appalachian Trail.

European explorers first reached the area in 1751 when Christopher Gist mapped the region. The land was later designated as protected to preserve its natural resources and ecological systems.

The area hosts a biological research station that studies the region's habitats and wildlife. Visitors walk through lands that have been observed and documented by scientists for many decades.

The best access is through marked hiking trails available at various entry points in the national forests. Visitors should be prepared for mountainous terrain and should bring maps or local guides.

The area contains rare mountain bogs and red spruce wetlands that support an unusually high variety of mammals and birds. These specialized habitats are uncommon in the eastern United States.
