Herschell–Spillman Motor Company Complex, historic daylight factory complex located at North Tonawanda, Niagara County, New York
The Herschell-Spillman Motor Company Complex is a historic factory in North Tonawanda that manufactured carousels and amusement rides. The site comprises multiple brick buildings with large windows and a five-story water tower, constructed between 1895 and 1921, and later used by Remington Rand until around 1965.
The factory started in 1895 as a power station for the local electric railway and quickly became a center for manufacturing carousels and amusement rides. In 1925, Remington Rand purchased the site and operated it for about 40 years before the buildings were converted into residential lofts.
The site was once the heart of a manufacturing community where carousels and amusement rides brought joy to people across the country. The hand-carved wooden horses and painted animals that visitors see today reflect the pride workers took in their craft.
The buildings are now converted into residential lofts with exteriors accessible from the street, preserving the original brick and window structure. Visitors can explore the outer appearance and water tower to experience the architectural heritage of the industrial era firsthand.
The museum within the complex preserves functioning carousels with original punched-card band organs, showing a rare example of early mechanical entertainment technology. Visitors can actually experience the antique music and motion of these machines, an encounter rarely found in the modern world.
