Johnson County Courthouse Square is a two-story brick building topped with a prominent central tower and four corner towers with pointed roofs, situated in downtown Franklin. The surrounding grounds span roughly 2 acres and include benches, landscaped areas, and pedestrian pathways around the structure.

The courthouse was constructed between 1879 and 1881 under the design of architect George W. Bunting. Its architectural style blends Second Empire, Neo-Jacobean, and Romanesque Revival elements, reflecting the tastes of that building era for public structures.

The square takes its name from the Johnson County Courthouse at its centre, built in 1879–1881 and designed by George W. Bunting, who also designed the courthouses at Frankfort and Anderson. The courthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981, and the surrounding square in Franklin remains the address locals give for the county's courts and public business.

The courthouse stands on the town square in downtown Franklin, Johnson County, Indiana, at the coordinates 39.48 N, 86.055 W. The building is a working county courthouse, so the square is best visited on foot from the surrounding streets. The grounds around the 1881 structure are open public space in the middle of the commercial centre.
