The building incorporates a historic brick structure at its base from the early 20th century, with the new tower rising clearly above it.

The site originally held the Aronson Building, a brick structure built in 1903 that survived the 1906 earthquake. Decades later, planners chose to incorporate it into a new residential project rather than demolish it.

The tower's lower four floors are planned as the permanent home of the Mexican Museum, a collection of Mexican and Chicano art founded in San Francisco; the museum is housed in the building itself, not next door. Across Mission Street lie Yerba Buena Gardens and the Moscone Center.

The building is private and not open to the public, but the exterior is easy to view from the street. The surrounding area is easy to explore on foot, as several museums and public plazas are nearby.

The Aronson Building, integrated into the tower, once housed shops and offices in the city's commercial district. Its facade remains visible from the street today, showing a clear contrast with the smooth surface of the modern tower above.
