Spinks house

The Spinks House is a three-story Arts and Crafts bungalow in Pasadena featuring cedar trim, plaster walls, and redwood details throughout. The interior spaces showcase carefully designed rooms that preserve this handcrafted style to this day.

The house was built between 1907 and 1909 by the renowned Greene and Greene architectural firm for Canadian judge William Ward Spinks. This period marked a high point for Arts and Crafts design in Southern California.

The house blends Japanese design principles with California building traditions, reflecting the Arts and Crafts movement of its era. Visitors can see how this mix of Eastern and Western elements shaped both the interior spaces and outdoor areas.

The property sits on about 1.5 acres bordering a wooded canyon with trails and viewpoints nearby. The original architectural elements have been preserved through careful restoration and are clearly visible during a visit.

The terraces and gardens were designed by Isabelle Greene, granddaughter of architect Henry Mather Greene. This family connection gives the property a special horticultural character that weaves the structure into the surrounding landscape.
