Katherine Emery Estate

The Katherine Emery Estate is a Tudor Revival residence in San Marino featuring multiple gable ends, dormers with carved bargeboards, and half-timbering throughout its exterior. The building retains its original architectural character and was completed in 1928.

Architect Myron Hunt designed the house as a California interpretation of English Tudor style. The project emerged during a period when wealthy families adapted European designs for their homes on the West Coast.

The formal gardens and stone balustrades show how wealthy families arranged their properties in the 1920s. The interior spaces reflect the tastes of that era, with generous rooms designed for social gatherings.

The house sits in a residential neighborhood and can be viewed from the street, making its architectural details clearly visible. The location is easy to find, but visitors should remember this is a private property.

The gardens were designed by renowned landscape architects Florence Yoch and Lucile Council, who created specialized areas for cutting flowers, vegetables, and grape cultivation. These practical garden spaces show how early 20th-century landscape design combined beauty with function.
