Stamps Store
The Stamps Store is a stone building in Osage, Arkansas, constructed between 1899 and 1902 in Romanesque Revival style with rounded arches and sturdy stone walls. The structure contained a large open retail space on the first floor, living quarters on the second floor, and a half-story meeting room above.
The building was erected by Willie and Millie Sneed between 1899 and 1902 and remained in the Stamps family's hands from 1912 to 1990. Its listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990 recognized its architectural merit and role in local history.
The store served as a gathering place where neighbors shared news and built community connections. Today it houses Osage Clayworks, where visitors can see handmade pottery and experience how the building continues to bring people together around local craftsmanship.
The building sits along Arkansas Highway 103 between Alpena and Huntsville in a quiet setting off the main road. Visitors can easily stop to view the exterior and explore the handmade pottery at Osage Clayworks now operating inside.
The building operated continuously under the Stamps family for nearly 80 years, underlining its deep importance to the community. This extended period of family operation was uncommon and demonstrates how thoroughly the store was woven into local life.
