Steve Jobs Garage, Historic resource in Los Altos, United States.
The Steve Jobs Garage is a one-story house on Crist Drive in Los Altos, California, with white walls, red brick details, and a standard two-car garage. It sits in a residential neighborhood and looks much like the other homes along the same street.
In 1976, the first 50 Apple computers were assembled by hand in the garage, marking the start of what would become one of the most recognized companies in the world. The house belonged at the time to Steve Jobs's parents, Paul and Clara Jobs.
The garage has become a reference point for the idea that important things can start in ordinary places. People from around the world come to stand in front of it, often pausing for a moment before the plain facade of a house that looks like any other on the street.
The house is private property and can only be seen from the street, where warning signs are posted near the entrance. Visitors should stay on the public sidewalk and keep noise to a minimum out of respect for the neighbors.
When Los Altos annexed the land from Santa Clara County in 1983, the street number changed from 11161 to 2066, which is why older records list a different address. Steve Jobs himself later admitted that much of the actual work happened in his bedroom rather than in the garage.
