Hermosa Creek Wilderness, Protected wilderness zone in San Juan National Forest, Colorado.
Hermosa Creek Wilderness is a protected area within San Juan National Forest in Colorado, spanning mountainous terrain covered by dense spruce and fir forests mixed with aspen groves. Clear streams cut through the landscape, creating varied habitats and defining the character of this rugged setting.
The Ute people and other Native American tribes historically hunted and gathered throughout this land before federal protection came through the Hermosa Creek Protection Act of 2014. This legislation marked a significant step in safeguarding the area from development.
The wilderness functions as an outdoor laboratory where visitors learn about conservation, wildlife protection, and responsible land management practices.
Two main trails, Salt Creek and Clear Creek, serve as the primary access routes for hiking and horseback travel through the landscape. Visitors should prepare for changing mountain weather and bring appropriate gear, as the terrain is steep and exposed in many areas.
The area hosts the largest Colorado River Cutthroat Trout reintroduction program in the southwestern United States, with fish thriving in the cold mountain streams. This effort has significantly boosted the population of these rare fish and makes the region a critical refuge for the species.
