Italian Swiss Colony, Historic winery in Asti, Sonoma County, US
The Italian Swiss Colony facility contained massive storage areas with a capacity of 100 million gallons of wine, expansive picnic grounds, and Italian villas.
Andrea Sbarboro established the Italian Swiss Colony in 1881 to create employment opportunities for Italian immigrants from San Francisco through grape cultivation.
The winery distributed millions of postcards in the 1960s showing workers wearing Italian peasant costumes, reflecting the heritage of its immigrant founders.
Located along Highway 101 between Healdsburg and Cloverdale, the winery attracted 300,000 visitors annually during its peak in the late 1960s.
The facility featured a stone structure built in 1897 above an underground vat that could hold 500,000 gallons of wine.
