Dewey W. Wills Wildlife Management Area

Dewey W. Wills Wildlife Management Area is a wildlife refuge spanning LaSalle and Catahoula Parishes in Louisiana, featuring diverse ecosystems including wetlands, bottomland hardwoods, bayous, and lakes. The landscape supports various wildlife species and offers multiple access points for recreation.

The area emerged from earlier conservation efforts and received its current name in 1978, following decades of timber harvesting and land management. This renaming reflected a shift toward focused wildlife care and sustainable practices.

The area provides space for seasonal hunting activities, including lottery hunts for deer, turkey, waterfowl, and small game that rotate through the year. Local hunters view this place as an essential part of their traditions and way of life in central Louisiana.

Visitors can access the waterways through five concrete boat ramps and stay at four primitive camping areas for fishing activities. The water levels and accessibility vary seasonally, so checking conditions before visiting is helpful.

The area contains a special water zone where only oar-powered boats are permitted, creating a genuine wilderness experience without engine noise. This rule protects sensitive habitats and allows visitors to experience nature in peace.
