Ctesiphon, Archaeological site in east-central Iraq

The ancient city stands on the eastern bank of the Tigris River, 35 kilometers southeast of Baghdad, featuring the massive brick arch of Taq Kasra.

Established around 120 BCE as a Parthian military camp, Ctesiphon served as the winter capital for both Parthian and Sasanian empires until 637 CE.

The city contained a mixed population of Arameans, Persians, Greeks, and Assyrians, who practiced Christianity, Judaism, and Zoroastrianism under Sasanian administration.

The ruins of Ctesiphon lie in the village of Salman Pak, accessible from Baghdad, with the Taq Kasra arch remaining as the primary structure for visitors.

The Taq Kasra arch represents the largest single-span brick arch from antiquity, measuring 37 meters high and 26 meters across.
