14th of July Bridge, Suspension bridge in Baghdad, Iraq

The 14th of July Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Tigris River and connecting central Baghdad with the Karrada peninsula. The structure carries vehicle and pedestrian traffic between different parts of the city as a major transportation link.

Architect David B. Steinman designed the structure in 1956, and construction began in 1961 as part of Iraq's infrastructure development. The bridge's completion came during a period when the country was expanding modern transportation connections.

The bridge takes its name from July 14, 1958, marking the day Iraq's revolution transformed the country from monarchy to republic. The name carries meaning for locals as a reference to this pivotal moment in their nation's past.

The structure serves as a key transportation route for daily through-traffic and eases connections between the commercial zone and central neighborhoods. Crossing is easier outside rush hours when traffic is lighter.

This is Baghdad's only suspension bridge and was built on soft alluvial soil, requiring special engineering techniques to create a stable foundation. This foundation solution set the project apart from typical bridge constructions.
