Sayidat al-Nejat Cathedral in Baghdad

Sayidat al-Nejat Cathedral in Al Karadah al Sharquiya is a church designed in the shape of a boat, with a large cross rising like a mast and supporting an arch-shaped sail structure. The interior features wooden paneling on pillars and walls, while a carved wooden band above the nave displays names of victims from a 2010 attack.

The structure replaced an earlier church when it opened in 1968, a time when Christian families were relocating from central Baghdad. This rebuilt sanctuary reflected the community's movement to this new quarter.

The building displays a mosaic showing the coronation of the Virgin Mary, created in 1994 by a Muslim artist and reflecting cooperation across faiths. Such artworks by people of different beliefs remain visible in how visitors experience the interior today.

The wooden interior design makes it easy to navigate all areas of the church and creates a calm space for visiting. Guests should approach the space with respect, as this location holds deep meaning for the community and serves as a place of remembrance.

A small memorial room inside holds photographs, damaged sacred objects, and personal items belonging to two priests who died in a tragic incident. This quiet space allows visitors to learn about these spiritual leaders and honor their memory.
