Latin Saint Joseph Cathedral Baghdad, Catholic cathedral on al-Jumhuriya Street, Baghdad, Iraq
The Saint Joseph Cathedral features traditional Iraqi construction with thick walls, incorporating a hemispherical dome reaching 32 meters in height topped by a cross.
The cathedral, completed in 1871 after five years of construction, served as a hospital during World War I when Ottoman forces controlled the facility.
Polish troops conducted religious services in the cathedral during World War II, commemorated by a bronze statue of Bishop Joseph Gaolina inside the building.
The structure requires extensive restoration work due to foundation issues, with walls sinking below street level and water damage affecting the roof.
The cathedral contains a graveyard housing the tombs of early Carmelite fathers, monks, and the remains of scholar Anastas al-Karmali.
