The Baghdad Planetarium features a central dome structure positioned diagonally across from the Baghdad Central Railway Station in Zawra'a Park.
The facility opened in 1979 as the first planetarium in the Middle East, following initial plans developed during King Faisal II's reign with architect Frank Lloyd Wright.
The planetarium functioned as a primary educational institution for astronomy in Iraq, attracting students and researchers from across the region until 1991.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports announced rehabilitation plans in 2011, though the building remains closed due to damage sustained during military conflicts.
The planetarium's establishment coincided with Iraq joining the International Astronomical Union and developing the National Observatory at Mount Korek.
