Mausoleum of Umar Suhrawardi

The Mausoleum of Umar Suhrawardi is a religious structure in Baghdad featuring a marble dome supported by ten sturdy pillars that form its main support system. The complex includes a prayer section designed to serve worshippers and was built with thick walls that show careful engineering.

The mausoleum was built in the 12th century during the Abbasid Caliphate as a religious monument. Major restoration work took place between 1902 and 1926 to maintain and strengthen the structure.

This site serves as a spiritual center dedicated to the founder of the Suhrawardi Sufi order, drawing followers who visit to pay respects at the tomb. The devotional practices and the way visitors move through the space reflect the continuing religious importance of the shrine.

The site is located between Sheikh Umar Street and Bab al-Wastani, making it accessible by foot from surrounding areas. Visitors should plan their visit around prayer times when the space is in active use.

The cemetery surrounding the complex was originally called Al-Wardiyya before being renamed Sheikh Umar Cemetery following Suhrawardi's burial there. This name change reflects how a single person's spiritual importance transformed the location's identity.
