Al-Sarafiya bridge

Al-Sarafiya bridge, Steel truss bridge in Baghdad, Iraq

Al-Sarafiya bridge is a steel truss structure that spans the Tigris River, connecting the neighborhoods of Waziriyah and Utafiyah in northern Baghdad. The crossing measures about 450 meters in length and 14 meters in width, accommodating both vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

A truck bombing in 2007 caused major damage to the structure, which led to a complete reconstruction effort. The rebuilt crossing reopened to traffic in May 2008 after Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki officiated the ceremony.

The bridge serves as a crossing point that many Baghdad residents use daily, shaping how people move between the northern neighborhoods. It reflects how communities depend on such connections to stay linked together.

The crossing is open to two-way traffic and generally accessible from the northern districts during daylight hours. Visitors should be aware that traffic conditions may vary depending on the time of day.

The structure has endured multiple rounds of conflict, including bombardments in 1991 before the 2007 bombing occurred. This resilience shows how infrastructure can persist through decades of turbulence.
