Two Stories Bridge, Road bridge in Baghdad, Iraq
Two Stories Bridge is a double-deck road bridge in Baghdad, Iraq, built over the Tigris River with one traffic level stacked above the other. Each deck handles traffic moving in a separate direction, which allows a greater number of vehicles to cross the river at the same point.
The bridge was built in the early 1990s, when Baghdad needed new river crossings to cope with rising traffic across the Tigris. The double-deck structure was chosen to increase capacity without requiring a second separate bridge nearby.
The bridge is woven into the daily routine of Baghdad's residents, who rely on it to move between different parts of the city. Crossing it gives a real sense of the pace of urban life in the Iraqi capital.
The bridge connects to roads on both sides of the Tigris, making it easy to approach from different parts of the city. Crossing during off-peak hours is a good idea, as traffic on both levels can be heavy during rush times.
Unlike most double-deck bridges where both levels carry traffic in the same direction, each floor here handles traffic going the opposite way. This makes the crossing function almost like two separate one-way bridges stacked on top of each other.
