Kuala Lumpur International Airport, International airport in Sepang, Malaysia
Kuala Lumpur International Airport is an international airport in Sepang District that has two main terminals connected by an automated rail system. The airport grounds extend across former agricultural land and include runways for long-haul flights as well as separate areas for international and regional connections.
The airport opened in June 1998 to replace Subang International Airport and handle the growing demand for air travel. Planning began in the early 1990s when the Malaysian government decided that a larger site would be needed.
The terminals display Islamic geometric patterns on ceilings and walls, combined with large windows that bring in natural light. Travelers passing through often notice the prayer rooms and washing facilities designed according to Islamic traditions, available in both main terminals.
The airport sits about 50 km south of downtown Kuala Lumpur and can be reached by express trains, buses, and taxis. Arrivals should plan enough travel time as the terminals are spread out and walking distances between gates can be longer.
The main terminal contains a separate satellite building that passengers reach by traveling through an underground tunnel on an automated train. This design allows for a greater number of boarding gates without expanding the main building.
