St. Mary's Cathedral

St. Mary's Cathedral is a Gothic Revival church standing near Dataran Merdeka with pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and flying buttresses characteristic of Early English design. The building can hold roughly 180 worshippers in its main sanctuary.

An original church from 1887 on this site was replaced in 1895 by the current structure, which became the first brick church built on the Malay Peninsula. This transition marked an important shift in colonial-era construction methods.

The cathedral serves the diverse community of Kuala Lumpur by offering services in multiple languages including English, Mandarin, and Bahasa Malaysia. This reflects the international makeup of those who gather here regularly to worship.

The building houses a grand pipe organ built by Henry Willis in 1898 that has undergone multiple restorations over more than a century. This historic instrument adds significantly to the musical quality of services held here.
