Langkawi Cable Car

Langkawi Cable Car is a gondola lift in Langkawi, Malaysia, connecting a base station at the foot of Mount Mat Cincang with two additional stops along the slope. The top station reaches 708 meters above sea level and offers an open view over the sea and surrounding forests.

An Austrian company worked with partners in Malaysia to build the installation over roughly one year between 2001 and 2002. The investment stood at 46 million ringgit and the opening provided visitors with a new link up the mountain.

The upper station often hosts wedding ceremonies because couples choose the rainforest view as a backdrop. Guesthouses near the base offer photo opportunities in traditional dress and sell locally made keepsakes.

The system runs daily from half past nine in the morning until seven in the evening, and rides remain worthwhile even in overcast weather. Wait times grow during late morning, so arriving earlier usually means a calmer experience.

The gradient between base and middle station reaches 42 degrees, ranking among the steepest sections for comparable installations in Asia. Because of this angle, passengers watch the forest floor during the ascent from an almost vertical perspective.
