Tioman Airport, airport in Malaysia
Tioman Airport is a small aerodrome on Tioman Island in Malaysia that handles scheduled flights using twin-engine turboprop aircraft. The facility features a modest terminal with check-in counters, seating areas, and a few local shops and cafes.
The airport underwent modernization in the late 1990s, with investment in runway extension and improved safety equipment. Berjaya Air operated scheduled flights from there until the service stopped in 2014.
The airport sits in Tekek village and serves as a cultural gateway, connecting island life with the mainland. For most visitors, arriving by plane marks the start of their experience with the island's slower pace and water-based way of living.
Most hotels offer free transfers to the airport, especially Berjaya Resort, so arrange this ahead of time. If you do not have a transfer, agree on the taxi price in advance to avoid dealing with pushy touts.
The runway can only be used in one direction because hills at the south end prevent approach from that side. Landing here was once quite challenging for pilots due to the steep hillside and cliff at the runway's edge.
