HNLMS K XVII, Naval submarine in Rotterdam, Netherlands
The HNLMS K XVII was a submarine operated by the Royal Netherlands Navy and now rests as a wreck on the ocean floor. The vessel was equipped with torpedo tubes and powered engines that allowed it to navigate both above and below the surface.
The submarine was built in the 1930s and served the Dutch fleet, first in European waters and later in Asian seas. It sank and disappeared until it was rediscovered decades later.
The vessel represented Dutch naval engineering capabilities during the 1930s, operating as part of the Royal Netherlands Navy colonial defense strategy.
The wreck lies on the ocean floor at significant depth and is only reachable for specialized divers. The location is not accessible to ordinary visitors but is documented through museum exhibits and historical records.
Dive teams recovered the steering wheel from the wreck and were able to identify the vessel using serial numbers. The discovery was rare evidence of equipment recovery from extreme ocean depths.
