Larut, Matang, and Selama, Administrative district in Perak, Malaysia
Larut, Matang, and Selama is an administrative district in Perak comprised of three distinct regions that together form a substantial area in northern Malaysia. Taiping serves as the administrative center, coordinating management across these different sections.
The area developed during the British colonial period from the 1880s onward due to tin mining along the Larut River. This mining activity led to the creation of one of Malaysia's earliest railway connections.
The population reflects Malaysian diversity with 62.7% Bumiputera, 26.1% Chinese, and 11% Indian residents maintaining their traditions and practices.
The district is managed by two local authorities: Taiping Municipal Council handles the southern area while Selama District Council oversees the northern region. Visitors should note that administrative services are distributed between these two centers.
Within the district lies Taman Tasik Taiping, Malaysia's first lake garden developed in the late 1800s. The Selama region also features multiple waterfalls that cascade down naturally in a series of tiers.
