Chelsea Tower, Residential skyscraper on Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai
Chelsea Tower is a residential skyscraper on Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai, rising to around 820 feet (250 m) across 49 floors in a postmodern style. The building holds both private apartments and hotel rooms, with the hotel side managed by SRG Hospitality.
The tower was built between 2003 and 2005, during a period when Dubai was transforming its skyline at a pace rarely seen anywhere in the world. It was originally named Al Salam Tower II before being renamed during construction.
Sheikh Zayed Road, where the tower stands, is lined with tall buildings that together define how modern Dubai looks and feels to visitors. Walking or driving along this stretch gives a clear sense of how the city shaped itself around vertical growth over just a few decades.
The tower is easy to spot from Sheikh Zayed Road, one of Dubai's main arteries, and can be reached by metro or taxi without difficulty. Visitors should keep in mind that the residential floors are separate from the hotel areas, which are the parts generally open to the public.
When it was completed, combining long-term residences with a hotel under the same roof was an uncommon approach for this part of Dubai. That model went on to influence the design of several later towers along the same road.
