The Index, Skyscraper in Dubai International Financial Centre, United Arab Emirates
The Index is a skyscraper in Dubai International Financial Centre with 80 floors rising to 328 meters. It features concrete structural elements on its eastern and western sides that shield the interior from direct sunlight.
Foster and Partners designed the building, with construction starting in 2005 and the project becoming a notable addition to the financial district during Dubai's rapid expansion. The tower represents an early architectural response to the region's development boom at that time.
The building integrates residential units from floor 31 to 77, while the first 29 floors accommodate office spaces for international financial companies.
The building has 27 elevators and parking facilities, making it easy for visitors and workers to access different levels. A cooling system keeps internal spaces comfortable even when desert heat outside is extreme.
The building uses an east-west orientation to minimize heat gain in the desert setting. Large sun shades cover the southern facade, working together with the structural design to reduce natural heat sources entering the interior.
