Vlorë, Port city in southwestern Albania
Vlorë is a port city in southwestern Albania that extends along a protected bay between the Adriatic and Ionian seas, with mountains rising in the background. The urban area combines an active harbor with residential neighborhoods, and boulevards lead from the waterfront into the center where markets and administrative buildings stand.
The Albanian Declaration of Independence was proclaimed in this city on November 28, 1912, establishing the first Albanian government. Greek colonists had founded the settlement in the 6th century BC under the name Aulon, meaning channel or glen.
The Independence Museum presents documents and artifacts from the Declaration of Independence period, illustrating the formation of the Albanian state. Visitors can see the original rooms where the first government began its work and made fundamental decisions.
The city center can be explored on foot, with most points of interest and shops within easy walking distance of each other. The harbor and waterfront promenade are also accessible without a vehicle and provide orientation landmarks for navigation.
The position at the boundary between two seas gives the water along the coast different color tones depending on where you stand. Fishermen often sell their catch directly at the quay, allowing visitors to see fresh seafood before it reaches the market.
