Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza, International airport in Nikël, Albania
Nënë Tereza is an international commercial airport located in Krujë Municipality, serving the Tirana and Durrës regions as Albania's main gateway for air travel. The terminal spans several floors with shops, restaurants, and waiting areas for passengers traveling between domestic and European destinations.
Construction began in 1955 when Albania sought to develop infrastructure for international air connections. Over the decades, expansions and upgrades transformed the facility from a small base into a central hub for travel between Europe and the Balkans.
The terminal honors Mother Teresa, born in Skopje but deeply connected to Albanian heritage, whose legacy greets travelers through imagery and references throughout the building. Her story shapes the first impression visitors receive when arriving in the country.
The airport sits roughly 17 kilometers from Tirana, with bus lines linking the terminal to the capital and offering straightforward access for arrivals. For travelers with their own vehicle, around 1900 parking spots are available, spread across several lots around the terminal building.
The single runway sits at an elevation of around 350 meters (roughly 1,150 feet) above sea level and allows landings by aircraft of different sizes. This central location makes the facility a key connection point for routes linking the Balkans with Western European cities.
