Prezë Castle, Medieval fortress in Prezë, Albania
Prezë Castle is a medieval fortress perched on a hilltop near Tirana, Albania, built with four corner towers and thick stone walls. The layout follows a military design with defensive ramparts running along the edges, giving the structure a clear view in every direction over the surrounding plain.
The fortress was first built in the 6th century under Emperor Justinian I and was later expanded by the Thopia family, a powerful Albanian dynasty that controlled much of central Albania in the 14th and 15th centuries. Each phase of construction added new layers to the original structure, reflecting the changing needs of its rulers over time.
The castle takes its name from the small village of Prezë that sits at its base, and the two have always been closely linked. People from the surrounding area come here on weekends to walk the old walls and look out over the plain that stretches toward Tirana.
The castle sits close to Tirana's international airport and is easy to reach by car from the city. The ground around the walls is uneven and sometimes slippery, so solid footwear is a good idea before exploring the site.
A clock tower from the 19th century was added directly into the medieval structure, which is an unusual feature for a hilltop fortress of this type in Albania. This shows that the site was still actively used and adapted long after its original military purpose had faded.
